Aftermarket Touchscreen/DVD/Reverse Camera (RCD510 copy) for 2006 Jetta

Hi guys. I don't want to start an argument regarding original equipment versus aftermarket as I realise that OEM stuff tends to be good but at a cost. I came across an aftermarket unit by chance that has lots of extras included (namely reversing camera). My wife and I have just had a son about a month ago and I thought that the camera might be a good investment for the future but it also has Bluetooth and lots of other extras. Has anyone bought, or know anyone that has bought something one of these and whether they worth it. I'm tempted to give it a go but I may suffer from the battery drain issue due to the age of my Jetta but as this is not an OEM product does that battery drain issue fall away! It seems like a good deal but obviously I am a little cautious. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks guys. Dash DVD Stereos FOR VW Passat Jetta Skoda GPS CAN BUS Back UP Reverse Camera | eBay

I was getting one of these: Group Buy / EOI new generation DNS head units (RNS-510 alternative)

I pulled out of the DNS group buy late last year (for a number of reasons) and have recently bought a real RNS, I'm very happy I did.

I bought one similar to what you describe, looks identical. I chose an Ebay seller who was based in Brisbane and was importing them from China.

I picked it up one morning and returned it the next day, Whilst it had all the fruit and a superior map to the VW OE unit, the rest was rubbish.

Ultimatley,I went for the OE ie RNS510 and have been very happy with it. Since I bought it, they have become available at a much lower price than genuine. See forum sponsor ....

yep those aftermarket gps/dvd/cd/usb gizmos are rubbish. My dad forked out for one, and pulled it out straight away, not even worth $50.

horrible radio reception, GPS useless and thats when the supplied (and only one you can use) memory card isnt corrupting itself. Poor sound quality etc etc.

maybe there are people out there who are putting together the same thing but with quality electronic & fancy GUI's but its a gamble. Is there such thing as a double din surround for these cars that lets you fit a brand name double din system? Because thats where i would be heading

You can buy VW double DIN surrounds on eBay. This is the kind of thing: http://bit.ly/19z7ZL3

What I found was that by the time you'd bought this, plus an ISO to CANBUS harness, aerial adaptor kit and the steering wheel adaptor kit, you've spent almost as much as the DNS-810 linked to above (which is fully CANBUS compatible out of the box).

I know I may not be considered the most unbiased voice here but I'd just like to point out that nearly all aftermarket Chinese VW units look identical externally, but all are not made equal. There are probably over 20 factories pumping out such units and 90% of them are the crap that the OP describes them to be.

However, I've been distributing the Audiosources ANS series unit for over a year now and I have plenty of customers to tell you the difference between them and the eBay junk. And now the new DNS series well.. I believe it to be a game changer, but time will tell and I'll let the product speak for itself.

edit: sorry, not the OP, I meant brimway and MINT_JETTA's comments.
