My local BJ air gunned the wheel nuts on so tight that when I removed them, the head sheared of the Tee wheel brace!

I had the opposite once, many years ago, from a Jax place - the wheel nuts on one front wheel were only finger tight. I wondered what the clunking noise was driving home from the place! All the studs had to be replaced as the threads were all stripped by the wheel moving about on them.

brad - I'm assuming the prices you listed are from Costco?

Tempe tyres - like you asked. They have a website & "tyre finder".

As I said, they are usually $5-$10 cheaper per tyre when you call but you have to confirm they have stock or will put 4 aside for you. I reckon they are turning over 500-700 retail sales a day & probably wholesaling off another 200 units/day.

I have no idea what Costco charges.

Also, I hear BJs & Jax will pricematch now so it's worth a try with your local guy rather than wasting 1.5hrs each way coming down from Cherrybrook. I'd happily pay a premium to offset the fuel / time cost.

Thanks brad. I found the Tempe Tyres tyre finder just after I posted here and realised that's what your reference was.

I always factor in fuel etc costs and time these days when chasing "bargains". If it was only say $100 difference for the four tyres, I wouldn't bother, but there's a near $300 quoted difference! Anyway, the guy from Jax said to me when I asked for a quote, to make him the "last phone call" - clearly indicating he'd price match.

These are what I've used

Michelin PS3
Lovely all round tire, lasts well, great grip in both dry and wet, not very noisy
When going hard the initial turn in response a little soft

Goodyear F1A2
A little more dry grip than the PS3, maybe a little less wet grip than PS3
Last very well but more noisy than PS3
When going hard they are simply awesome, brake hard, turn response is excellent, makes your day
Given the price and performance of these tyres, it's really hard to consider others

Conti CS3
Very hard wearing, pretty noisy (gets bad when below 50% tread), they often slam through pot holes
Need to pump them up pretty hard to get the turn in response I wanted
Very good level of dry grip - wet was ok also
The only point where they really shine is the km you get out of them (with good level of grip)
Generally I would not buy these given the price

Bridgestone Potenza 040 & 050
High grip level in the dry, on wet days needed to get them warm first
Prone to axle tramp on hard launches
Turn in is good - braking is great
Price is simply awful

Maxis M35
I had these on the wife's Mazda3
Surprising tyre - does everything ok - lasting well - price was ok
Hard launch was better than the 040 (no axle tramp)

Continental Contact MC5
We got these in a "pay for 3 get 4" deal - they are on the Mazda3
Surprising tyre - does everything ok - lasting well - price was good

Gee Martin, based on that review and the prices above for the Goodyear, you're pointing me in the right direction of them that's for sure!!!

I'll stay away from the Potenza based on your axle tramp comments!!!

Goodyear F1 Asssymetric 2's have come in the top 2 tyres consistently in Motor mags ultimate tyre test for the past 3-4 years.

The overall rating for each tyre needs to be explained - it's not the average of the ratings
The Hankook scored only 73% on rolling resistance - that should have knocked it out of the running
But it beat the Goodyear which has a lowest score of 86 in wet handling

But look at the total scores of all the top tyres - there is nothing in it

And then you need to know who funding the test and article - etc
