does it say why?
id be checking the length the bolt sticks out the back of both wheels (making sure its similar)
check the seat type of the bolt and wheel. usually OEM wheels are all ball seats so id find it a bit wierd...
i have the stock 15" wheels on my 2012 polo 77 tsi
i have bought a set of 17" gti wheels off a forum member, but reading thru the owners manual, it says that the current bolts wont be compatible with the 17" wheels, could someone confirm this ?

Will 100% fit. So long as the wheels are from a POLO GTI they will have a PCD of 5x100mm and will fit on any polo
The bolts should be 14x1.5x28mm, im pretty sure as i needed to buy some locking bolts for my new wheels and i have test fitted them and they seem to fit very snugly.
Its a radial seat, not conical or ball,... Radial

thanks guys, just wanted to confirm, didnt want to put the new wheels on knowing the bolts may be wrong -_-
I went from the 15" lakeside in my Polo to the 17" Boavista's and they bolted on without any form of mod or extra parts, took a whole 10 mins. The Boavista's are the exact same as the Denver's / Detroit's for the Polo GTI
Never, ever heard that in all my years working with people in the aftermarket wheel distribution industry.
The seat types are
- conica/taperedl (60 degree)
- flat
- and ball/spherical/radius (which can have different radii - R10, R12, R13 and R14, maybe others)
5 bolt VW wheels use M14x1.5 28mm R12 ball (spherical/radius) seat wheel bolts
4 bolt VW wheels use M12x1.5 26mm R12 ball (spherical/radius) seat wheel bolts

Can anyone help me with websites where I can buy aftermarket wheel studs? Preferably light weight and custom colours? I have seen many aftermarket wheel nuts for Japanese cars but not studs.
I've bought a set of aftermarket rims and the bolts supplied with them are longer than the original factory bolts that came with the detroits. As a result they were not supplied with lock nuts.

You do not want to go lightweight on studs if doing a conversion so that you can run wheel nuts.

Can't you use the OEM Detroit bolt/lock nut/plastic cap set?
Otherwise there are probably lots on Ebay varying in quality.
